Richard Mayfield

Visiting Speaker

Richard Mayfield –

A photograph that interprets fashion and beauty with portraiture, creating stunning imagery that range from being soft and delicate to creative edgy images that are more of a gothic style. He uses flash within all his work as he said, controlling the lights is a huge benefit when taking a photograph as it enables you to create different moods within the image, you also then don’t have to be dependant on weather conditions when shooting on locations. He also spoke about how he had experimented with many genres of photography but feels that his passion falls more with portraits as he loves the interaction with models as he feel he can create more of an atmosphere and mood within the images that the audience can relate with. The spoke about the order in which he works to make a shoot successful this was, Ideas, Innervation, Interested team, location, lighting, lens/ camera, setting scene, setting energy and selection of images. Within his work he uses a lot of soft boxes, which are often used to soften lighting and make models skin look a lot more smooth. He also doesn’t use much editing but he will use Light room and Photoshop to alter inner details within his images. He advised us that the best way to get noticed is to build a book a portfolio and do test and experiment with as many resources as possible. I felt listening to him explain various pieces of work, really help me understand how he reached the amazing work he produced. I also feel it has inspired me to try out more on location fashion shoots as I feel that the images that can be produced especially by using lighting kits are really elastically pleasing.
