WASSINKLUNDGREN

WASSINKLUNDGREN

Wassinklundgren our a collective that are photography based, the two men went to university together and after leaving felt it would be very beneficial to work together as a team on numerous projects around the world. After a couple of years one of them moved to Japan and the other lives in London they both stay in contact very regularly via skype, email and phone calls, they take up business oppitunities in both countries and work together on the concepts, planning of shoots, locations, organising equipment and camera types and then selecting and finalising their images together. They explained that it is not a big issue which of them presses the shutter to take the image as a lot more going into the planning and printing of images. The have done work for numerous magazines and advertisement companies, yet when they are doing their own projects they always present their work in book form they feel this is very important as the placement of the images creates a whole new theme and meaning to the audience and they feel that if they were to sell singular prints it takes the whole meaning away from the image.

When they finished university they applied for funding and then went to China as this was a dream that they shared, the had a very short time to edit their image they then decided that to edit they would lay out all images together then sort which they liked they then would make a book of the images and they would each go through the book and simply rip out the page which they didn’t like the book would then be reprinted without the lost pages and this would be how they would edit their publications.

They spoke about many projects that they had
done for example, the Plastic Bottle 5x4 project that was in china looking at the environment and economy. The concertina book that folded out to be a man that had height marking on the image. The don’t smile save it for later book that looked at how you cant take image within public places yet with a photo book and a mirror they were able to break the rules with such a simple object and one of their more recent books which is called “Tokyo, Tokyo” looking at the different areas of Tokyo and different styles and genres of people within the society, also the benefit of there being two of them meant that they were able to stand across from each other and take the exact same image but from the opposing angle which when looking at the book is very effective as although it is just a different perspective they look completely different and could have different meanings if separated. I felt their work to be very inspirational I liked that they only make books as I agree that it gives the viewer a broader view of the subject matter and concept and also allows the audience to physically get involved with the work. It has also opened me up to something new that is possible when finishing university having a partner is not something that I would have thought about before this talk.
